Using the heat gun and a scraper to remove paint from the left side revealed a wide spot of body filler over the left rear wheel well. There are only two very small repairs along the wheel opening when looking from the back of the panel, so this isn't very thick and doesn't appear to be covering a big repair. It's a real mystery why it's there in the first place.
It's probably best to leave a sleeping dog right where it is, so this will probably be blocked a bit and left alone. It's not hurting anything, was done very well originally and is fairly thin. Still, it's tempting to take it out and deal with what's underneath just to be sure it's not going to be a problem down the road.
It was too tempting not to fit up the tail light panel to the rear of the car now that most of the old panel has been removed. This fit up as well as one would expect a perfect copy of the original to fit.
Clamps with a reach wide enough to clamp this into place will have to be sourced, but this should go well.
