After a failure when installing the rebuild kit in the water pump, the only idea as to why it failed is that this cap, seen at the top of the photo, was supposed to be discarded. Yet, research results about this are inconclusive.
Perhaps it was simply there to hold all of the pieces together with the main seal or perhaps it is supposed to be pressed onto the shaft, but there is no real way to know. The instructions, of course, make no mention of this part and accompanying photos show installation without it. Yet, it is clearly part of the seal and is installed in other reference photos.
A seal driver for this part was located - again, no mention of this in these directions - and ordered. It appears to enable the installation of this seal with this mystery part in place.
After ruining this kit, a new one will have to be ordered and this mystery will have to be solved.
