Hmmmm

The alternator has been rebuilt now that the electronic components have arrived. It looks very good, but there's a problem with the electronics. Friends at NAPA bench tested it and it failed to put out more than 11.5 volts, so there was some more work to do to get it right.

The testing equipment at NAPA indicated that the diode is bad, but it tests OK with a multimeter. With some digging and some time to think, it was discovered that the voltage regulator was a one-wire voltage regulator instead of the three-wire regulator that was ordered. With a correct regulator installed, it works well now and looks great.
