This is what is left of an original starter from a 1971 Corvette. It's truly a core in every sense of the word, but it's the real deal. It's the final major component of the engine that needed to be tracked down. The starter that was on the car matched the carburetor, both of which were scavenged from a 1975 GMC pickup apparently.
The date code reads 1F 3 1 which is June 3, 1971, made by the first shift working that day.
Too bad it was dropped. The solenoid was damaged which destroyed the charming Bakelite Delco-Remy cap.
This will be stripped down and eventually rebuilt. The starter brace was still on the engine, though the heat shield has long rusted away.
