Discovery

Digging a bit more into the debris left over from taking the convertible top frame while trying to find a date code revealed that this car was built with a white top.

When the original top was replaced, the upholsterer apparently chose to cut the top from the frame to save the effort of pulling out all of the staples. A new black top was laid over these pieces of the original white top and no one was the wiser — at least not until now. There are also pieces of white vinyl top material that the factory used to shim some of the trim on the soft top frame.

Much of this car is original and it was assumed that the black soft top on it was original as well, but clearly the top was replaced at some point and the car's owner chose to have a black top installed rather than white.

A black soft top is preferred out of personal preference. Yet, to be truly 'restored' it should have a white top.

There's plenty of time to decide.
