Off it goes

The wiper door, another lovely cast part, is famous for the tiny steel bolts that allow it to raise and lower reacting with the aluminum that it's made out of. An attempt to remove them usually results in one — or in the case of this car all of them — being stuck and breaking off.

Drilling them out is difficult since the part is softer than the bolt one is trying to remove. Corvette Central, one of the popular parts suppliers for Corvette parts, offers a service to restore these doors. They must have a drill press with a jig to hold the door at the correct angle to allow for an accurate repair.

The door comes back with stainless steel inserts so this shouldn't happen again.

This car's door was boxed up and shipped out to them today. It should take three weeks or maybe more to get it back.
